Island Views: My Love of Vinalhaven

I first visited Vinalhaven, an island off the coast of Maine, thirty-five years ago for a family vacation. Our children were young, and it seemed like a great place for kids with plenty of outdoor activities -- hiking, swimming, berry picking, and fishing. Little did I know at the time that this small island would become a treasured part of our lives.

Back then I was still working with an 8 x 10 view camera with tripod, dark cloth, and large film holders that slid into the back of the camera -- the same kind of camera used by Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, two people whose work I greatly admired. Although I switched to digital photography since that time, my basic approach to subject matter has not changed. I work slowly and deliberately, always trying to be present to the moment and to the light within nature.

My wife, Cathy, and I continue to enjoy the beauty of Vinalhaven for two weeks every summer. I feel part of the arts community there and will be doing a one-week photography workshop on the island next June. The workshop is offered through Strabo Tours. – From Capture to Display.  Dates of the workshop are May 31-June 5, 2020.  For workshop information please see:
